My Best Employee Quit on the Spot – What Should I do?

employee quit on the spot

This past week, I stumbled upon an old ‘Dear Abby’ type advice column where managers and leaders could submit a scenario about something going on in the workplace to get feedback on how to best handle it. In this case, a leader wrote about how their best employee quit on the spot after being told … Read more

Quiet Quitting: The Impact Leaders Have on Their People

We’ve all heard of The Great Resignation, but have you heard of Quiet Quitting? When I first heard this term, I thought it was people quietly leaving their roles – but it’s not that. It’s actually everyone who couldn’t quit during the great resignation, but wanted to, and is now doing what we call ‘quiet … Read more

But many leaders still struggle and remain … Read more

Do You Seek to Give or to Get From Others?

seek to give or get

Seek to Give or Get? After reading many books on communication, I’ve noticed that many focus on communicating as a way of securing what we want from others. Oftentimes, these same books highlight the need to listen for what we can ‘get’ out of people, instead of what we can ‘give’ to people by listening … Read more

I remember when I turned in the first draft of my new book, The Art of Active Listening. Most would think I am out of my mind to not only be writing another book but to take a long vacation just days before the first draft was due…but that’s exactly what I did! I needed … Read more

How You Make People Feel When You Lean In

how to make people feel at work

If you’ve read a book with illustrations, oftentimes the drawings visually play out the storyline in place of reading the text. Similarly, our facial expressions can ‘say’ a lot about how we feel and what we think before we even have the opportunity to use our words. Our facial expressions impact our conversations positively or … Read more

From navigating change to creating emotionally safe cultures, Becoming Unshakable reveals what it really takes to create leaders—and organizations—that can’t be shaken.

Hi, I'm Heather

I've been through every type of
ORGANIZATIONAL CHANGE
you can think of.

Layoffs, reorgs, mergers, acquisitions and major technology shifts. More than 20 years leading teams through high-stakes situations where results mattered, people depended on me, and decisions couldn't wait.

Those years taught me how to lead. But they also showed me the hidden cost of always being the one who holds it all together.

During our second reorg in less than a year, I walked out of a meeting with no say in what was happening, just marching orders. When my team asked how the meeting went, I should have said, “Give me 15 minutes to process this.” But I didn't. Instead, I let them absorb every ounce of my frustration.

Then I saw their faces.

The people who looked to me for stability had just watched me unravel. What was that teaching them about their ability to handle the pressure?

That moment changed how I saw my role as a leader. Leading teams isn't only about grit or resilience. It's about how your presence builds the trust your team needs to function when things get hard.

Today, I help organizations build unshakable leaders, teams, and cultures. Because when leaders become the calm teams can count on, organizations don't just survive change, they come out strong enough to handle what’s next.
