In this episode, Heather sits down with Hansel Lynn, the Founder, and CEO of theCoderSchool, a coding school for kids that focuses on a mentor relationship with experienced coders, Code Coaches, who can guide their students through their technical journey. He’s fluent in Cantonese (can fake it with Mandarin), is a published co-author (with Wayne) of two children’s coding books, and is an avid endurance athlete, having run the Western States 100 Mile race, and is currently an active Ironman triathlete. He’s even in the dessert business, having recently created and opened Cudos Frozen Custard and Mini Donuts with his wife.

Key Takeaways

  • One-size-fits-all is not always the best approach to education
  • At theCoderSchool kids get one-on-one guidance
  • Hansel doesn’t believe in traditional grading for students
  • As a leader, you must always trust your intuition and stick to your gut feeling
  • Always challenge yourself to be uncomfortable in order to grow

Hansel Lyn’s Bio

Hansel spent much of his early career in the high-tech corporate world in and out of Silicon Valley and struck out on his own in 2011. From running his own rock music school for kids as a franchisee to developing Bay Area real estate, Hansel dabbled in a few things before founding theCoderSchool in 2014. Hansel currently lives in Palo Alto with his uber-supportive wife (and business partner!) Lisa and three awesome kids. Hansel is responsible for company strategy, branding, technology, and franchising, and can be reached at hansel@thecoderschool.com.
