Leaders need coaches too!

I have a confession to make. It’s a little embarrassing. Actually, its very embarrassing.

I am directionally challenged in a big way!

The other day, I was meeting with a client for the first time and parked in a parking garage. When leaving the garage, I didn’t look at the level I was on. Instead, I assumed I would know how to get back to my parking spot, because it appeared to be one level up and I only took one flight of stairs down.

My meeting went very well, but when I headed back to my car, I didn’t know how to get to my car.

I asked the front desk attendant which floor I might be on given the “one-flight-of-stairs” scenario. He then kindly stepped from behind his desk to escort me around. We went to one level, but that was not correct. As we proceeded to the next level, he began to talk me through the possibilities. Then, after a process of elimination, we landed on the right level.

He was my guide on my journey of disorientation. I thanked him for all of his help and then quickly, and with much humiliation, scurried to my car and out of the garage.

I know that this sounds pretty pitiful. It is one of my weaknesses. I am terrible with directions!

This makes me think about the journey of a leader.

Should leaders have to find their way all alone, or should they seek out and accept help from others?

We all need coaches and guides on our path to leadership excellence. We don’t just arrive without hard work, missteps and a little help along the way.

In my experience as an executive coach, it is as important that I have a coach to guide me on my professional journey. I am not perfect. I need unique and unfiltered insights to make me better at what I do for others. Professional coaches help you do that.

As we head into this new year, consider who you might look to as a coach, mentor and guide. We will all make mistakes, because that is where we learn the most. Nonetheless, bring a coach along for the ride and your successes and journey will be much more smooth and memorable.

From navigating change to creating emotionally safe cultures, Becoming Unshakable reveals what it really takes to create leaders—and organizations—that can’t be shaken.

Hi, I'm Heather

I've been through every type of
ORGANIZATIONAL CHANGE
you can think of.

Layoffs, reorgs, mergers, acquisitions and major technology shifts. More than 20 years leading teams through high-stakes situations where results mattered, people depended on me, and decisions couldn't wait.

Those years taught me how to lead. But they also showed me the hidden cost of always being the one who holds it all together.

During our second reorg in less than a year, I walked out of a meeting with no say in what was happening, just marching orders. When my team asked how the meeting went, I should have said, “Give me 15 minutes to process this.” But I didn't. Instead, I let them absorb every ounce of my frustration.

Then I saw their faces.

The people who looked to me for stability had just watched me unravel. What was that teaching them about their ability to handle the pressure?

That moment changed how I saw my role as a leader. Leading teams isn't only about grit or resilience. It's about how your presence builds the trust your team needs to function when things get hard.

Today, I help organizations build unshakable leaders, teams, and cultures. Because when leaders become the calm teams can count on, organizations don't just survive change, they come out strong enough to handle what’s next.
